Bikram practice

I've now practiced in another one of Stockton's most desirable places for yoga - our classroom! This week's regular practice was accompanied by a Bikram practice in class. In preparation for this, I admit that I was a bit intimidated! I have only practiced under one instructor who I have become used to and comfortable with, and even though she switches up the classes often and provides a variety, I was nervous to step outside of that box.
The Bikram practice was unlike any yoga class I've attended. The first thing that threw me off was that the instructor did not practice with us or demonstrate, but only give verbal instructions to the class. This was a major adjustment to me. The instructor did a lot of speaking, giving information about the physical effects that each yoga pose provided for the body. It was clear that the practice was to be thought of primarily as an exercise, which is unlike other classes I've attended where that is not the focus.
The practice consisted of a set series of poses which focused primarily on holding and balancing, unlike other more movement based practices. Once I was able to adjust to the structure of the class, the Bikram practice became enjoyable to me. I felt that I was able to keep up and perform each of the poses that was instructed. Although I feel a bit strange about the sort of script and jargon used by the instructor, the physical element was enjoyable.
